The APLA profile test, or Antiphospholipid Antibody (APLA) test, is a blood test designed to detect the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in your blood. These antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that mistakenly attack normal tissues, which can lead to various health issues.

Why is the APLA Profile Test Important?

The APLA profile test is vital for diagnosing and managing conditions such as:

  • Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS): This condition is characterized by abnormal blood clotting and can lead to serious complications such as stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and pregnancy-related issues.
  • Lupus: An autoimmune disorder that can affect multiple organs and cause various symptoms.
  • Recurrent Miscarriages: Women who experience multiple miscarriages may be tested for APLAs to determine if these antibodies are a contributing factor.

APLA Panel Test Price, Purpose, and Procedure in India

Introduction

The Antiphospholipid Antibody (APLA) Panel is a specialized blood test that detects autoantibodies associated with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS)—a condition that increases the risk of abnormal blood clots, recurrent miscarriages, and other serious health complications. DNA Labs India provides accurate, ISO-certified APLA testing with pan-India home collection, helping patients and doctors identify underlying autoimmune clotting disorders early.

What is the APLA Panel Test?

The APLA Panel measures the presence and concentration of specific autoantibodies that target phospholipid-binding proteins in your blood. Phospholipids are essential components of cell membranes and play a critical role in normal blood clotting. When the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies against these proteins, it can lead to a hypercoagulable state—meaning your blood is more prone to forming dangerous clots.

A complete APLA Panel at DNA Labs India includes detection of:

  • Anti-Cardiolipin Antibodies (aCL) – IgG and IgM isotypes

  • Anti-Beta2-Glycoprotein I Antibodies (aβ2GPI) – IgG and IgM isotypes

  • Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) – detected through functional clotting assays

These three antibody groups form the core laboratory criteria for diagnosing Antiphospholipid Syndrome and are essential for a comprehensive evaluation.

Clinical Indications: Who Should Take This Test?

The APLA Panel is prescribed when patients present with clinical features suggestive of Antiphospholipid Syndrome. Your doctor may recommend this test if you experience:

Vascular Thrombosis:

  • Unexplained deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs

  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs)

  • Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) at a young age

Pregnancy Complications:

  • Recurrent early miscarriages (three or more unexplained losses before 10 weeks)

  • One or more unexplained late pregnancy losses (≥10 weeks gestation)

  • Severe pre-eclampsia or placental insufficiency requiring preterm delivery

Autoimmune Conditions:

  • Known diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or other autoimmune disorders

  • Unexplained thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)

  • Livedo reticularis (purplish skin discoloration)

Risk Groups: Who Needs Screening?

The APLA test is particularly important for:

  • Women with recurrent pregnancy loss – APLA antibodies are found in a significant percentage of women with recurrent miscarriages

  • Young stroke survivors – especially those without traditional cardiovascular risk factors

  • Patients with lupus – a notable proportion may test positive for antiphospholipid antibodies

  • Individuals with unexplained arterial or venous thrombosis

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is fasting required before the APLA test?
No, fasting is not required for the APLA Panel. You can eat and drink normally before your sample collection.

2. How do I book a home collection for the APLA test?
You can book directly on this page by clicking the “Book Now” button, or call our 24/7 helpline. Our team will schedule a convenient time for sample collection at your home.

3. How accurate is the APLA Panel test?
The APLA Panel is highly accurate when performed in ISO-certified laboratories using standardized methods. At DNA Labs India, we follow strict quality protocols to ensure precise detection of antiphospholipid antibodies.

4. What does a positive APLA test mean?
A positive result indicates the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in your blood. This suggests an increased risk for blood clots and pregnancy complications. However, diagnosis of Antiphospholipid Syndrome requires both clinical criteria (thrombosis or pregnancy morbidity) AND positive lab tests on two or more occasions at least 12 weeks apart.

5. Can the APLA test be done during pregnancy?
Yes, the APLA test can and should be done during pregnancy if you have a history of recurrent miscarriages or pregnancy complications. Early diagnosis helps doctors manage your pregnancy with appropriate medications to improve outcomes.

6. What is the difference between IgG and IgM antibodies?
IgG and IgM are different classes of antibodies. Persistent IgG antibodies are more strongly associated with clinical complications. IgG typically indicates a longer-term immune response, while IgM may be transient. Both are measured in our comprehensive panel.

7. How long does it take to get APLA test results?
Results are available within 4-5 business days after your sample reaches our laboratory.

8. Is my report kept confidential?
Absolutely. DNA Labs India follows strict data protection policies. Your results are shared only with you via a password-protected digital report sent to your registered email address.

9. Do I need a doctor’s prescription for this test?
While you can book the test independently, we strongly recommend consulting a rheumatologist or hematologist who can interpret your results in the context of your clinical history and guide appropriate management.

10. What medications can affect APLA test results?
Blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin or heparin can interfere with Lupus Anticoagulant testing. Please inform our phlebotomist and your doctor about any medications you are taking before the test.
