Thrombophilia evaluations are usually performed to assess the need to extend anticoagulation, hence testing should be performed in a steady state, remote from the acute event. Laboratory assays to detect thrombophilic states include highly sensitive and specific tests like molecular diagnosis, immunologic and functional assays. Many coagulation factors and inhibitors are affected during acute thrombosis, acute illnesses, inflammatory conditions, pregnancy & certain medications. Antithrombin is decreased by heparin and acute thrombosis whereas protein C & S levels are increased during acute thrombosis, but decreased by Warfarin.

Thrombophilia is a condition where the blood has an increased tendency to form clots. This can lead to serious health problems such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke. Thrombophilia can be caused by genetic or acquired factors, and it is important to diagnose and treat this condition to prevent complications.

Symptoms of Thrombophilia

Thrombophilia may not cause any symptoms until a blood clot forms. Symptoms of a blood clot can include:

  • Swelling in the affected area
  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Redness or discoloration in the affected area
  • Warmth in the affected area

  • Chest pain
  • Coughing up blood

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Diagnosis of Thrombophilia

Thrombophilia can be diagnosed through a blood test called the Thrombophilia Profile. This test measures the levels of certain proteins in the blood that are associated with an increased risk of blood clots. The Thrombophilia Profile includes tests for:

  • Factor V Leiden
  • Prothrombin gene mutation
  • Antithrombin III
  • Protein C
  • Protein S

If you have a family history of thrombophilia or have experienced blood clots in the past, your doctor may recommend this test.

Thrombophilia Profile Test Cost

The cost of the Thrombophilia Profile test in India is approximately INR 20,000. This cost may vary depending on the laboratory and location.

Importance of Thrombophilia Profile Test

Thrombophilia can be a serious condition that can lead to life-threatening complications. It is important to diagnose and treat thrombophilia to prevent these complications. The Thrombophilia Profile test can identify genetic or acquired factors that increase the risk of blood clots. This information can be used to develop a treatment plan that may include medication and lifestyle changes.

Conclusion

If you have a family history of thrombophilia or have experienced blood clots in the past, it is important to talk to your doctor about the Thrombophilia Profile test. This test can identify genetic or acquired factors that increase the risk of blood clots and can help develop a treatment plan to prevent complications.
