A Lifesaving Screening for Colorectal Cancer

In India, colorectal cancer is a growing concern, with an increasing number of cases being diagnosed every year. However, with the help of advanced screening tests, it is possible to detect this cancer at an early stage, when it is most treatable. One such test is the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), a simple, non-invasive, and cost-effective screening tool that can help save lives.

What is the Fecal Immunochemical Test?

The Fecal Immunochemical Test is a stool test that detects the presence of blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of colorectal cancer. The test uses antibodies to detect the presence of human hemoglobin in the stool, which is a more accurate and reliable method than other stool tests.

How does the test work?

The FIT is a simple test that can be done at home. The test kit consists of a small brush or stick and a collection cup. The individual collects a stool sample using the brush or stick and places it in the collection cup. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The test results are usually available within a few days.

Benefits of the Fecal Immunochemical Test

The FIT has several benefits that make it an attractive screening option for colorectal cancer. These include:

  • Non-invasive: The test is non-invasive and does not require any preparation or sedation.
  • Cost-effective: The test is relatively inexpensive compared to other screening tests, priced at 6000 INR.
  • Easy to use: The test is simple to use and can be done at home.
  • Accurate: The test is highly accurate and reliable.
  • No dietary restrictions: There are no dietary restrictions or changes required before taking the test.

Who should take the Fecal Immunochemical Test?

  • The FIT is recommended for individuals who are at average risk for colorectal cancer, which includes:Individuals aged 45-75: This age group is at higher risk for colorectal cancer.
  • Individuals with a family history: Those with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.
  • Individuals with a history of polyps: Those who have had polyps removed in the past.

What do the test results mean?

The test results are usually reported as positive or negative. A positive result indicates the presence of blood in the stool, which may require further testing, such as a colonoscopy. A negative result indicates that no blood was detected in the stool.
Expert Opinions :According to Dr. Rohan Patel, a gastroenterologist at a leading hospital in Mumbai, “The Fecal Immunochemical Test is a valuable screening tool for colorectal cancer. It is non-invasive, cost-effective, and easy to use, making it an attractive option for individuals who are at average risk for colorectal cancer.”
Current Trends:The FIT is becoming increasingly popular in India, with many hospitals and healthcare centers offering the test as part of their screening programs. The test is also being promoted by healthcare organizations and advocacy groups as a way to increase awareness and encourage early detection of colorectal cancer.

Why choose the Fecal Immunochemical Test?

The FIT is a lifesaving screening tool that can help detect colorectal cancer at an early stage, when it is most treatable. With its non-invasive and cost-effective nature, it is an attractive option for individuals who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. By taking the FIT, individuals can take the first step towards early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer, which can significantly improve survival rates.

Conclusion

The Fecal Immunochemical Test is a simple, non-invasive, and cost-effective screening tool that can help save lives. With its numerous benefits and expert recommendations, it is an attractive option for individuals who are at average risk for colorectal cancer. Don’t wait until it’s too late, take the FIT today and take the first step towards a healthier tomorrow.

Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) detects haemoglobin in stool using antibodies specific to human haemoglobin. FIT has gained international acceptance as the worthy successor to a conventional guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBt) for screening Colorectal cancer(CRC).

It is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. CRC almost always develops from adenomatous polyps, patients may remain asymptomatic until the cancer progresses to a fairly advanced stage. Conventional occult blood test for CRC screening utilizes gFOBt which is susceptible to dietary interferences and has limited sensitivity for adenomatous polyp (precursors for most of the CRC).

As a result of the dietary restrictions and the need for three different samples on consecutive days, adherence rates of gFOBT screening are generally poor. FIT is specific for human haemoglobin thus eliminating the need for dietary and medication restrictions, also only a single collection is required thus improving the adherence rate. The specificity of FIT is greater than 99% with reported sensitivities of 96% based on patient population.
