Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine with a wide range of functions. IL-6 production is rapidly induced in the course of acute inflammatory reactions associated with injury, trauma, stress, infection, brain death, neoplasia, and other situations. Sequential measurements of IL-6 in serum or plasma of patients admitted to the intensive care unit were found to be useful in evaluating the severity of SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome), sepsis & septic shock and to predict the outcome of these patients. IL-6 is also useful as an early alarm marker for the detection of neonatal sepsis. It also plays a role in chronic inflammation e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis. This panel also helps to assess if a patient is likely to develop complications like a cytokine storm & coagulation defects due to Sars-CoV-2 infection.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) Extended Panel Test: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Cost

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a protein that plays a vital role in regulating the immune system’s response to infection and inflammation. Elevated levels of IL-6 have been linked to a variety of health conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. The IL-6 Extended Panel Test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the levels of IL-6 in the blood and identify potential health issues.

Symptoms of Elevated IL-6 Levels

As mentioned earlier, elevated levels of IL-6 are associated with several health conditions. Some of the symptoms that may indicate an increase in IL-6 levels include:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Fever and chills
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Shortness of breath

Diagnosis of Elevated IL-6 Levels

The IL-6 Extended Panel Test is a blood test that measures the levels of IL-6 in the blood. The test is typically ordered by a healthcare provider if a patient is experiencing symptoms that may be related to elevated IL-6 levels. The test can also be used to monitor the progress of a patient’s treatment for conditions that are associated with high IL-6 levels.

The IL-6 Extended Panel Test is a relatively simple and straightforward procedure. A healthcare provider will draw a sample of the patient’s blood and send it to a laboratory for analysis. The results of the test are typically available within a few days.

Cost of the IL-6 Extended Panel Test in India

The cost of the IL-6 Extended Panel Test in India varies depending on the healthcare provider and the location. At DNA Labs India, the cost of the test is INR 12,168. This cost includes the test itself and the analysis of the results by a qualified healthcare provider.
